Marion Natural History Museum156 viewsOn November 29, the Marion Natural History Museum community group had fun crafting a distinctive butterfly mobile for the museum, drawing inspiration from the detailed illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian. In this workshop, the participants combined historical accuracy with modern design to produce a captivating display that will hang above our antique butterfly case. Marion Natural History Museum155 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group had a wonderful time learning about “Amazing Arthropods” with entomologist Blake Dinius of Plymouth County Extension Service. Members of the group were able to handle a couple of beautiful Io moths, which as caterpillars feed on maple leaves. Festival of Trees 155 viewsThe Festival of Trees opened on November 27 with a reception at the Cushing Community Center on Route 6 in Marion. Sponsored by the Friends of Marion Council on Aging, the event showcased 14 decorated Christmas trees, along with an artisan sale, music, refreshments and a raffle for over 10 gift baskets. Marion Village Stroll155 viewsCars lined several Marion streets as residents gathered for the town’s Christmas Stroll on December 12. Front Street and connecting village roads were partially closed for the event, as families enjoyed refreshments provided by area merchants at their doorsteps and along the roads. Clydesdale horses escorted Santa Claus and passengers, while the Sippican Elementary School Band played, Tabor Academy student singer Wesley Lai of Hong Kong sang, and a bike rider juggled bowling pins. Marion Natural History Museum155 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius for his presentation, "To Bee or not to Bee." Blake explained that although wasps are not well-received, all of our bees are wasps. However, not all wasps are bees. Bees are a subgroup of wasps and can be seen as a "vegetarian" wasp and get their protein from pollen. Bees are also much hairier than wasps. Blake jokes that bees are "hippie" wasps. Marion Natural History Museum155 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group wishes to thank Isaac Perry and the Marion Harbormasters for allowing us to view some of our native ocean birds. On April 27, we were able to make it to Bird Island to view the nesting boxes that have been set up by the state for the soon-to-arrive terns, which rely on this island as a safe spot to raise their young. Our group had a blast making ornaments (and eating junk food) during the event, and everyone brought home an ornament or two to share with the family.
