Stars & Stripes Forever Musical Revue271 viewsThe Marion Art Center staged the “Stars & Stripes Forever Musical Revue” last weekend to packed crowds. The rousing show mimicked a USO event, with the audience being entertained as the “troops.” The production featured the “Swanson Sisters from Sheboygan: Dixie, Trixie & Pixie,” (played by Caroline Blaise, Pam Breton, and Denise Bastos) and was hosted by the hilariously funny “Frankie B. Sharpe” (played by Eric Bosworth). The MAC theatre was set up cabaret style, and guests brought their own refreshments.

First Penny271 viewsHe keeps it in his wallet in a coin holder with a small cellophane circle. It’s an Indian head penny, in great condition, dated 1897. “This is the first penny I ever earned. When I showed it to my father, he told me that he was born in 1897, so that made the penny even more special, so I kept it safe from that day on,” said Tom Shire, a Marion resident. Tabor Academy’s Oyster Farm271 viewsTabor Academy’s oyster farm is like a marine biology lab by the sea, providing students with hands-on learning experience. The school hosts a summer camp where campers can explore oyster farming firsthand, compiling “oyster reefs,” large piles of oysters, and depositing them into salt water. Here, David Bill of the Nautical Science Department at Tabor inspects an oyster bag from his skiff Ting. Photo courtesy Tabor Academy

The students had a chance to conduct a variety of experiments and create their own mini-submersibles to take home. Many thanks go to Mark Whalen, engineer with Sippican/Lockheed Martin for all his hard work pulling this program together for us. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Marion Natural History Museum271 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank the Marion Harbormaster's office for a wonderful trip to Bird Island. The students were able to visit the island and see some of the birds that rely on this special habitat for raising their young. The children saw Oystercatchers, Osprey, and Terns. They also learned a little about the history of the lighthouse. This was a unique opportunity for students, many of whom do not have access to boats, to get on the water and enjoy Photo courtesy Elizabeth Leid
