Relay for Life379 viewsChildren went to the Center School in Mattapoisett to make their own ornaments and gifts at the Relay for Life workshop on December 6, 2009. For a $6 donation, children could pick from crafts like pine cone Christmas trees, clothes-pin reindeer, and foam ornaments – paint, glitter and glue were in abundant supply. Music was provided by Felonious Funk, and party-goers enjoyed a wide array of finger foods and fine spirits. Friendly conversation lingered over the silent auction tables, which offered original oil paintings, handmade felted purses, memberships to the Wareham YMCA and the Marion Art Center, and plenty of gift certificate to area businesses. A Christmas Carol378 viewsNearly 30 children from all over Southeastern, Massachusetts will perform in the 2009 Burt Wood School of Performing Arts production of A Christmas Carol. Performers include Skyler Callahan of Rochester and Abigail Wheeler of Marion. The shows are on Sunday, December 13, at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm in the grand ballroom of the Middleboro Town Hall, located on 10 Nickerson Avenue, in Middleboro. Nasketucket Bird Club378 viewsThis Great Horned Owl was spotted by "birder" Carolyn Longworth on a December Nasketucket outing. The next meeting of the Nasketucket Bird Club will be Thursday, January 26, 7:00 pm at the Mattapoisett library. The group will discuss plans for programs, trips, and speakers. Everyone is welcome. Nasketucket members include birders from Mattapoisett, Wareham, Marion, Rochester, Fairhaven, Acushnet, and other area towns.

Memorial Engine377 viewsDevoted brother and former New Bedford Fire Chief Roger Nadeau poses with an old fire truck that he is converting into a memorial engine to carry fallen firefighters in Massachusetts, and parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. The engine was donated to Mr. Nadeau by the Weymouth fire department after it developed serious pump problems. Mr. Nadeau's firefighter brother Gerald died from respiratory problems after a 2002 Fall River fire.

Disaster Drill377 viewsFairhaven Fire Department hosted a full-scale exercise to improve emergency response in the region. Mattapoisett, Rochester, Dartmouth, Freetown, Acushnet, and New Bedford all responded to a disaster that simulated an accident between a school bus and an oil truck at Livesey Park in Fairhaven.
