Mattapoisett Museum122 viewsJuniper Griswold, 6, participated in Earth Day activities at the Mattapoisett Museum on April 22. Delighting the children were two Nigerian goats owned by Emerald Heirloom Farm, Mattapoisett. The goats are part of a planned experiment by farmers Ruby Pasquill and Jonathan MacDugall, who are using sustainable farming practices. Next step for the farmers is planting vegetables using organic methods. The couple plans on partnering with a Rochester family farm in a swap of chickens in lieu of rent. Photo by MarApr 27, 2022

Marion Natural History Museum83 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius for his presentation, "To Bee or not to Bee." Blake explained that although wasps are not well-received, all of our bees are wasps. However, not all wasps are bees. Bees are a subgroup of wasps and can be seen as a "vegetarian" wasp and get their protein from pollen. Bees are also much hairier than wasps. Blake jokes that bees are "hippie" wasps. Marion Natural History Museum134 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a chance to take a closeup look at some of the amphibians and invertebrates that require these special habitats to survive. We found a leaf-rolling caddisfly larvae, several colorful chronomidge larvae, salamander and wood-frog eggs. All specimens made their way safely back to their specific pool, and the kids have learned to have a new respect for these “nurseries” of the forest.
