One in a Million1165 viewsOne-year-old Madison Gallant of Marion was recently the millionth visitor to Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford since the zoo’s re-opening in August of 2000. Madison was accompanied by her mother, Kate Ostneberg, who was the millionth and one visitor to the zoo. Kate and Madison received a free zoo membership, a $100 shopping spree at the North Woods Gift Store, a train ride around the zoo, and lunch at the Bear’s Den Café.

Show-stopping Benefit1142 viewsShowstoppers Musical Entertainment, a community-service vocal troupe comprised of 22 local children, recently raised $1400 for the American Red Cross. The talented singing group held their Disaster Relief Concert, “Rockin’ Through The Ages,” on November 5 in a packed hall at the Knights of Columbus in Mattapoisett. The program showcased the children performing a musical revue spanning five decades.

Veterans Day Speaker1207 viewsLieutenant Commander Daniel Parilla, USN, of the Newport Naval War College will be the Principal Speaker at the Mattapoisett Veterans Day Ceremonies on Friday, November 11 starting at 11:00 am at Old Hammondtown School. LCDR Parilla wears the Heroic Action Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, and two Strike Flight Air Medals, along with various other commendations.

Cultivating Compassion1855 viewsPat Olney, Jean Kittridge and Barbara Whalen of the Garden Group ladies of the Mattapoisett Women’s Club, have been busy digging, dividing, and baking to benefit the hurricane victims. The group will hold a small plant sale/auction on Saturday, October 8 at 10:00 am at Dunseith Gardens on the corner of Route 6 and North Street in Mattapoisett, with all proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross.

Whale Winner1328 viewsFive-year-old Kate Lima of New Bedford is the winner of the “Name the Whale” Contest sponsored by First Night New Bedford. Kate chose to name the event’s tell-tale mascot “Welcome the Whale.” The First Night New Bedford 2006 committee chose the winning name “Welcome” for its cheerful whale design depicted on First Night buttons and posters. Kate received several prizes for her winning entry.
