Cultivating Compassion1818 viewsPat Olney, Jean Kittridge and Barbara Whalen of the Garden Group ladies of the Mattapoisett Women’s Club, have been busy digging, dividing, and baking to benefit the hurricane victims. The group will hold a small plant sale/auction on Saturday, October 8 at 10:00 am at Dunseith Gardens on the corner of Route 6 and North Street in Mattapoisett, with all proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross.

Whale Winner1290 viewsFive-year-old Kate Lima of New Bedford is the winner of the “Name the Whale” Contest sponsored by First Night New Bedford. Kate chose to name the event’s tell-tale mascot “Welcome the Whale.” The First Night New Bedford 2006 committee chose the winning name “Welcome” for its cheerful whale design depicted on First Night buttons and posters. Kate received several prizes for her winning entry.

Ned's Point Lighthouse Tours1406 viewsMembers of the U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla 67 will conduct free tours of Ned’s Point Lighthouse in Mattapoisett every Thursday during August from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, weather permitting. The last tour will enter the lighthouse at 5:45 pm and the lighthouse will close at 6:00 pm. There will be no morning tours in August and no appointments are necessary. (Wanderer file photo).

John Gibbons Bench Mark1710 viewsMattapoisett town officials, along with friends and relatives of the late John Gibbons of Mattapoisett, were on hand this past Tuesday evening for the formal dedication of a bench outside the Mattapoisett Town Hall in Mr. Gibbons’ memory. The bench is located alongside a similar one which was previously dedicated to late former Selectman John “Jack” DeCosta.
