Ghost stories 349 viewsIs the Mattapoisett Library haunted? Some who have worked there think so, and now a few more are believers after another Halloween season paranormal investigation by the ghost hunting group S.P.I.R.I.T.S on October 5. The members had some spooky tales to tell, and the library itself has stacks of scary (and not-so-scary) books to get us into the Halloween spirit. Photo by Jean Perry - October 11, 2018 edition

Corpse flowers375 viewsCorpse flowers – These monotropa uniflora – “Indian pipes”, “ghost plant”, or “ghost pipes” as they are otherwise known – are perennial waxy-white, fleshy, iridescent flowers that rise from the forest floor like tiny ghosts in a graveyard, hidden beneath the shadows of ferns and fallen tree trunks. These herbaceous flowers exist without the sun’s energy, void of the chlorophyll that gives other plants their green color. September 13, 2018

Colorblindness Corrective Glasses418 viewsI was colorblind, but now I see – The Mattapoisett Lions Club has donated a pair of colorblindness corrective glasses to the Mattapoisett Library, and are now part of the library’s ever-growing collection of ‘things’ to check out. Last time, my partner Scott and I checked out a metal detector and had ourselves an adventure. This time, we checked out the glasses and took them around town to see if Scott, who was born with a red-green color vision deficit, could catch a glimpse of a world in vivid color.

Reflecting on Harbor Days 393 viewsMirror, mirror, on the ground, what’s the fairest event around? This nautical mirror for sale at Harbor Days on Saturday reflects the general splendor of the annual Mattapoisett event as shoppers fill the many aisles of various arts and crafts vendors, looking to see what’s new and what’s traditionally found at Harbor Days year after year. Plasticastrophe! 420 viewsIt doesn’t matter that she’s about to be eaten by King Kong – Barbie stays smiling, as do all the Barbies planted in Teresa Dall’s “Barbie Garden” of 16 North Street in Mattapoisett. Here, Barbie manages to display a little Fourth of July spirit while making imminent annihilation appear blissful. Photo (and flag accessory) by Jean Perry - July 5, 2018 edition

On the ‘Clock’ 445 viewsNow you can literally watch your speed as you (hopefully) watch your speed on Route 6 with the two new permanent traffic speed indicators both east and west of the Little Neck Village entrance in East Marion. Rep. William Straus joined Police Chief John Garcia, MassDOT workers, and the Board of Selectmen early on Tuesday, June 12, for the unveiling and installation of the signs. Seen here, a State Trooper chats while Chief Garcia watches the sign flash a prompt to drivers who exceed 60 mph. Photo Jean Perry

A ‘millennial occasion’ 450 viewsMost of the graduates of the ORR Class of 2018 were born in the year 2000 at the turn of the 3rd millennium A.D., making this year’s ORR graduation a true millennial event. Congratulations to ORR’s Class of 2018! Photo by Jean Perry

Bloom (and Gloom) 441 viewsThe “bloom is off” the $7.9 million Marion Town House renovation article, which was defeated 214-120 on Monday night during the Annual Town Meeting. For now, the Town House will remain in its current state, which we think right now looks quite lovely juxtaposed behind the cherry blossom tree in full bloom outside. Photo by Jean Perry

Flower Power 433 viewsThe village of Marion is bursting with colorful blooms as spring sprung suddenly upon us in the Tri-Town region. These tulips were a literal traffic-stopping splash of color in the sun on Cottage Street across from the Marion Music Hall on Tuesday. Photo by Jean Perry

Leaves of ‘Sass’ 467 viewsApril is, among other things, National Poetry Month, and the ‘poet-tree’ at the Mattapoisett Library keeps growing with new poem leaves springing up every day. We especially liked the message on this leaf: “When life gives you lemons, make orange juice. Be unique.” Right on, young sassy poet… Stop by and post a poem of your own before April is over.
