Charlie Tate of Mattapoisett poses in front of a statue honoring Prince Henry the Navigator in Sagres, Portugal during a recent trip. The site is a navigation school to which scientists, cartographers, astronomers, and explorers from all over Europe once flocked. This school and its students sparked the “age of discovery” which culminated with the discovery of the Americas and also a sea route to Asia. There is a similar statue dedicated to Prince Henry located in nearby Fall River. 05/10/01 edition
