The August 4, 1955 cover of The Presto Press depicts the American pastime of square dancing, a weekend activity on the historic wharves located at Shipyard Park in Mattapoisett so popular that hundreds watched from the sidelines. The Mattapoisett-Fairhaven Parents Music Club used the proceeds from the opening dance that year to purchase musical instruments for the Fairhaven High School band, and square dancing inspired one local girl to become a professional square-dance caller.
