Classic Film Night At Marion’s Music Hall

Name the team that, in a series of films, was famous for their catchphrase, “Hey gang. Let’s put on a show!” If you were at Music Hall in Marion on Friday, you’d know the answer (which also appears at the bottom of this article).

Dozens of Marion residents turned out to the monthly classic film celebration, organized by the Sippican Historical Society.  The feature presentation was the 1937 musical “May Time,” starring Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, John Barrymore, and directed by Robert Z. Leonard.

In addition to the film, patrons were welcomed to enjoy free popcorn and admire some of the classic film memorabilia on display, from the personal collection of Marion resident Tom Shire, who offered several posters and photographs of classic film stars, as well as original signage from old movie theaters, and several almanacs listing every theater in every state of America, and its seating capacity.

Shire was also responsible for the curation, lay-out, and printing of the program, which included a classic Hollywood quiz.

The Historical Society has had success with their Classic Film Friday series, which ended its season on Friday night, but will return in August.

“We love doing this, we do it once per month,” Shire said.  “It’s just wonderful to be able to show a historic film in a historic building.”
