“Just the Facts,” the nonfiction book discussion group, will be reading Travels with Charley: In Search of America, by John Steinbeck. In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle Charley embarked on a journey across America. This chronicle of their trip meanders through scenic backroads and speeds along anonymous superhighways, moving from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness. Originally published in 1962, it provides an intimate and personal look at one of America’s most beloved writers in the later years of his life. It was written during a time of upheaval and racial tension in the South, which Steinbeck witnessed firsthand, and is a stunning evocation of America on the eve of a tumultuous decade. Café Parlez’ selection for July is The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Welcome to a surreal version of Great Britain, circa 1985, where time travel is routine, cloning is a reality, and literature is taken very, Very, VERY seriously. In detective Thursday Next’s world, you can literally get lost in a book and have to be rescued by her team, the Special Operatives. When characters begin disappearing from books, Thursday must track down the villain and enter the novels herself to avert a heinous act of literary homicide. We will discuss this book on Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 pm. Books are available at the desk, or bring your own copy.
