Sippican School Garden Club224 viewsThe Sippican School Garden Club has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Whole Kids Foundation to fund installation of a greenhouse on the school campus. This grant was supplemented by a $2,000 matching contribution from the Marion Garden Group, $1,000 from a donated discretionary fund, and $500 from another anonymous donor to fully fund the project.

The Mattapoisett, Marion, and Rochester Police Departments were joined by the Tri-Town Fire and EMS Departments, Marion Harbormaster, and Marion Recreation. Dry Harvest224 viewsIt’s cranberry season in Southeastern Massachusetts. With drought conditions, dry harvesting the berries has started largely unaffected by the lack of water thus far, but bog flooding later in the season could be affected if water sources are not replenished with rain. Paula and Dana Johnson of Rochester are in the midst of their dry pick, circling the bogs, one after the other, day in and day out with their mechanical Furfords and burlap sacks to harvest the cranberries fit for fresh fruit sale.

Sassy224 viewsMeet Sassy who has spent 16 years taking care of her humans and for many years was a fixture on the Mattapoisett wharves. Originally purchased by Mattapoisett ACO Kathy Massey, Sassy was then acquired from Massey when she was just a few weeks old by Arthur and Irene Frates. More than a decade later, Sassy still provides love and tenderness to the remaining members of her two-legged family, Arthur and Irene’s son, Robert, and his wife Elizabeth. Rob and Elizabeth feel “blessed” and call Sassy a “saint.”

Octopurrfest224 viewsThe Rochester cat shelter “It’s All About the Animals” held its 2nd Annual Octopurrfest on Sunday, October 2. Raising over $7,000, owner/operator Pam Robinson said this year’s event was “absolutely over the top!” The shelter is in the process of building an addition to create a cat room and a porch. “I cannot thank everyone enough for their wonderful donation and participation,” said Robinson. The estate, located in Canton, is a property of The Trustees of Reservations and open to the public. The ladies had a guided tour of the grounds and then enjoyed a bag lunch on the loggia.

Christmas Baskets224 viewsOn Tuesday, December 20, Rochester Facilities Manager Andrew Daniel was tying perfect Christmas bows to top off gift baskets for Rochester families purchased with donations from Town Hall staff and town boards and committees. Four families this year will receive a Christmas meal in a basket thanks to the efforts of all at Town Hall. Altogether $1,400 was raised at Town Hall, with half going to the gift baskets and the other half towards other town Christmas charities. Photos by Jean Perry
