Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Marion Natural History Museum8 viewsOn November 30, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group had a chance to learn about the different types of trees in our area and to look at some equipment used by foresters to help protect our trees. By looking at a tree "cookie," we were able to count the rings to determine its age and learn about the services, the different sections, including the heart wood, sap wood and bark or phloem provides the tree.

Spruce Tree8 viewsAmidst wet snow that tailed off into a cold Tuesday morning, the large spruce tree situated between the Elizabeth Taber Library and Sippican Elementary School was taken down after it was found to be a safety hazard. The tree is believed to have sustained a recent lightning strike, and large sections of the tree showed major rot. Some of the wood will be used to add to the memorial to four Sippican students honored at the site since 2009, and the bottom 3 feet of the trunk was preserved.

Marion Natural History Museum8 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group attempted to get to Bird Island on May 22 to visit the nesting tern population. Unfortunately, due to high winds and rough surf, we didn’t get all the way out there but enjoyed getting soaked on the ride out. We stopped briefly at Ram Island to try to get a little dried off before heading home. The kids had a blast checking out the beach and collecting shells.
