Festival of Trees98 viewsThe Festival of Trees opened on November 27 with a reception at the Cushing Community Center on Route 6 in Marion. Sponsored by the Friends of Marion Council on Aging, the event showcased 14 decorated Christmas trees, along with an artisan sale, music, refreshments and a raffle for over 10 gift baskets. Marion Natural History Museum98 viewsTed and Liz Brainard visit with Coahuila, a 700-pound meteorite, during the June 25 celebration of 150 years of the Marion Natural History Museum and the Elizabeth Taber Library. Select Board Chairman Randy Parker visited with museum volunteers, and children enjoyed a wide range of summer activities. Massachusetts Fire Academy 98 viewsThe Massachusetts Fire Academy conducted a 48-hour class on Saturday involving Fire personnel from the region at Magnolia Cranberry located on Sherman Briggs’ bog accessible off Front Street. The class focused on operating the engine (pumper) in both rural areas and areas with fire hydrants. Seven students enrolled from Marion Fire Department were enrolled. According to Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony, the class was originally scheduled for completion in 2020 but was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marion Natural History Museum98 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank Jim Pierson for his presentation on an introduction to Backyard Archaeology for our afterschool group. The students had a chance to take a close look at some of the artifacts he's found in his backyard and were shown how to use a metal detector to help find some of these items.

Marion Natural History Museum 98 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum community group and the Nasketucket Bird Club had a wonderful birding walk on November 16 led by Justin Barrett. We were able to identify over 18 different species of birds including belted kingfishers, golden-crowned kinglets, and red-breasted Nuthatches. Marion’s Christmas Stroll 98 viewsThe Town of Marion’s annual Christmas Stroll held on December 11 featured rides with Santa and Mrs. Claus on horse-drawn carriages, live entertainment from the Sippican Elementary School musicians, Christmas songs performed by Tabor Academy students, children’s activities and many refreshments offered along the sidewalks by village merchants. 1st Congregational Church of Marion98 viewsThe 1st Congregational Church of Marion staged a group of youngsters to perform their annual Christmas Nativity. The children enjoyed a much-deserved celebration with Christmas food and cookies, and excitement filled the air with the singing of carols and the making of a beautiful nativity scene that they take home to set under their Christmas trees. Spruce Tree98 viewsAmidst wet snow that tailed off into a cold Tuesday morning, the large spruce tree situated between the Elizabeth Taber Library and Sippican Elementary School was taken down after it was found to be a safety hazard. The tree is believed to have sustained a recent lightning strike, and large sections of the tree showed major rot. Some of the wood will be used to add to the memorial to four Sippican students honored at the site since 2009, and the bottom 3 feet of the trunk was preserved.

St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church98 viewsOn February 21, St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion celebrated Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras party. We ate delicious food and played lots of great games. Many thanks to the Youth Group for all their hard work preparing the evening’s Louisiana-style foods and for leading the games. Marion Natural History Museum98 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group attempted to get to Bird Island on May 22 to visit the nesting tern population. Unfortunately, due to high winds and rough surf, we didn’t get all the way out there but enjoyed getting soaked on the ride out. We stopped briefly at Ram Island to try to get a little dried off before heading home. The kids had a blast checking out the beach and collecting shells.
