Deputy Chiefs William Scott, Charles Blanchette, and Scott Cowell were toasted (and roasted) by Marion Fire Chief Thomas Joyce before family and friends at the Marion VFW Saturday night. The wives of MacDougal and Blanchette, and the daughter of Cowell, attached new deputy chief badges on the three gentlemen during the pinning ceremony, and the three selectmen honored the retiring chiefs with gifts.

Breakfast with Santa175 viewsMarion’s Police Brotherhood held its 3rd annual toy drive and pancake breakfast with Santa at Sippican School on December 6. Families were asked to bring new unwrapped toys, and in return they were given a delicious pancake breakfast and a photo with Santa. The toys are being donated to the Justice Resource Institute, which provides a wide range of services to at-risk families and individuals. Photos by Marilou Newell

Marion Village Stroll175 viewsThere were hundreds strolling the streets during the 2014 Marion Holiday Stroll on December 14. Celebrity sightings included Santa Claus on his carriage, the Grinch, the Nutcracker, and Sparky the Fire Dog. The Showstoppers and The Sippican School Marching Band lit up the afternoon until the tree lighting ceremony lit up the night, the finale of that starry-skied evening. Blue and Gold Banquet175 viewsIn a ceremony held at the Cub Scouts annual Blue and Gold Banquet on March 28, over 40 members of Pack 32 moved up in rank and nine Senior Webelos where awarded the Arrow of Light Award. The Arrow of Light is the highest award received in Cub Scouts and an award that moves up with the recipient to Boy Scouts.

Marion Natural History Museum175 viewsMany thanks to state-certified forester Phil Benjamin, Brian Butler of Oxbow Associates, and Gary Johnson of the Mattapoisett Land Trust, for donating their time and expertise to introduce the Old Hammondtown School sixth grade to the several of the unique ecosystems in Nasketucket State Park. Phil led a walk through the upland forests along the "Holly Trail", Brian led a walk along the intertidal shoreline, and Gary introduced the students to a vernal pool.

There was a performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band, a Birds of Prey demonstration, face painting, and a rock-climbing wall.
