New Year Plunge320 viewsOn January 1, 2013, Mattapoisett Town Beach played host to a New Year’s polar plunge fundraiser. The event, which attracted over 400 people, raised money to benefit BAM Foundation, Inc., a New Bedford non-profit which donates money to South Coast families dealing with members who have cancer. Veterans Day Ceremony in Mattapoiset320 viewsOn November 11 following the Veterans Day Ceremony at Old Hammondtown School in Mattapoisett, members of Boy Scout Troop 53 performed a flag decommissioning ceremony at the Mattapoisett Land Trust’s Dunseith Gardens. Flags had been placed in decommissioning boxes built by Drew Robert for his Eagle project. The flags were then collected from the boxes located at the police department, town hall and public library and prepared for burning and burial.

Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge320 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Family Fun Festival 320 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home. Mattapoisett YMCA320 viewsOn Sunday, October 20, the Mattapoisett YMCA hosted its first annual Harbor Brew Fest. Participants enjoyed this sunny day of local brew tastings, live music by Sean Carney, and fresh scallops, while overlooking beautiful Mattapoisett Harbor. A bonfire on the beach accompanied by a smores bar added to the fun. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Mattapoisett YMCA’s Annual Campaign that helps deserving children attend summer camp, preschool and afterschool care.

Heritage Days 2011319 viewsChildren festooned their bicycles and enjoyed a ride around the village as a part of the 2011 Mattapoisett Heritage Days on August 6. Other Saturday activities included guided village tours, an evening concert and a treasure hunt. Mattapoisett bustled with activities on Saturday, but the bonfire was canceled due to wind, and many Heritage Days activities were canceled on Sunday due to heavy rain. Photos by Felix Perez.
