Ghost stories 380 viewsIs the Mattapoisett Library haunted? Some who have worked there think so, and now a few more are believers after another Halloween season paranormal investigation by the ghost hunting group S.P.I.R.I.T.S on October 5. The members had some spooky tales to tell, and the library itself has stacks of scary (and not-so-scary) books to get us into the Halloween spirit. Photo by Jean Perry - October 11, 2018 edition

Corpse flowers415 viewsCorpse flowers – These monotropa uniflora – “Indian pipes”, “ghost plant”, or “ghost pipes” as they are otherwise known – are perennial waxy-white, fleshy, iridescent flowers that rise from the forest floor like tiny ghosts in a graveyard, hidden beneath the shadows of ferns and fallen tree trunks. These herbaceous flowers exist without the sun’s energy, void of the chlorophyll that gives other plants their green color. September 13, 2018

Colorblindness Corrective Glasses462 viewsI was colorblind, but now I see – The Mattapoisett Lions Club has donated a pair of colorblindness corrective glasses to the Mattapoisett Library, and are now part of the library’s ever-growing collection of ‘things’ to check out. Last time, my partner Scott and I checked out a metal detector and had ourselves an adventure. This time, we checked out the glasses and took them around town to see if Scott, who was born with a red-green color vision deficit, could catch a glimpse of a world in vivid color.

Reflecting on Harbor Days 435 viewsMirror, mirror, on the ground, what’s the fairest event around? This nautical mirror for sale at Harbor Days on Saturday reflects the general splendor of the annual Mattapoisett event as shoppers fill the many aisles of various arts and crafts vendors, looking to see what’s new and what’s traditionally found at Harbor Days year after year. Plasticastrophe! 453 viewsIt doesn’t matter that she’s about to be eaten by King Kong – Barbie stays smiling, as do all the Barbies planted in Teresa Dall’s “Barbie Garden” of 16 North Street in Mattapoisett. Here, Barbie manages to display a little Fourth of July spirit while making imminent annihilation appear blissful. Photo (and flag accessory) by Jean Perry - July 5, 2018 edition
